Debate Club

Aiming to give children a voice and develop their confidence, communication and language, children will take part in a series of after school sessions where quick-fire debates will make every child think of their feet!

This club is very much linked to British Values and gives children an opportunity to voice their thoughts, ideas and opinions whilst developing their articulation, team work and listening skills. Moreover, teaching them to see things from a range of perspectives is a real life skill that will help them as they move on into secondary school and beyond.

The question each week will lead to a discussion, appropriate to their age group, which will broaden their horizons as they begin to explore big ethical questions.

We have discussed and debated:

  • Do we really need the Queen?
  • Do aliens really exist?
  • Are we too reliant on modern technology?
  • Are boys and girls equal?
  • Should unhealthy foods be banned?

Each week the children are given time to research, organise and prepare their arguments. They are then able to take part in a debate where they are scored points for delivery, clarity and quick thinking!

Welcome back to the Summer term! Make sure you follow us on Twitter or look at the gallery and Whole School Learning sections of the website under the children's tab to find out school life at St. John's.
