Religious Education

As a church school, St John’s CE Primary School seeks to promote Christian values and understanding, ensuring that these values permeate the life of the school. The school’s ethos of love and care and its commitment to justice, responsibility and resilience are the foundation of its aims in educating the whole school community to make its proper contribution to society. We aim to create an environment in which each person, child and adult, can feel uniquely valued and in which diversity is celebrated.

Our Church of England School has very close links to our local church ”Saint John the Evangelist” and we see spirituality, Religious Education and collective worship as an essential part of our school and its teaching.

Through the teaching of Religious Education, we hope to foster children’s feelings of awe and wonder, delight and mystery. We hope to assist them in their exploration of the meaning of life, to support them in making life choices and help them confront difficult or painful situations they may have to encounter. We want children to value themselves and to recognise the way in which God, enabling them to show care and respect for others, values them.

At St John’s we want Religious Education to provoke challenging questions about the ultimate meaning and purpose of life, beliefs about God, the self and the nature of reality, issues of right and wrong and what is means to be human. Religious Education enables children to investigate and reflect on some of the most fundamental questions asked by people. At St John’s we aim to develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of the major world faiths, and try to address the fundamental questions in life, for example, the meaning of life and the existence of a divine spirit. We enable children to develop a sound knowledge of Christianity and other world religions. Children reflect on what it means to have a faith and to develop their own spiritual knowledge and understanding. We help our pupils learn from religions as well as about religions.
