PSHCE and Relationship and Health Education

At St John’s CE Primary School, we see Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) as being at the centre of all that we do. We are committed to promoting pupils’ self-esteem and emotional well-being and help them to form and maintain worthwhile and satisfying relationships, based on respect for themselves and for others, at home, at school, at work and in the local and global community.  It is present through our positive school ethos and guides the systems, policies and ‘every-day’ running of the school.  PSHCE and PSED (Early Years Curriculum) are recognised as an important aspect of the curriculum, where teaching and learning focus on the development of these skills and responsibilities and allow children to make informed choices.

Personal, social, health and citizenship education (PSHCE) develops the knowledge, skills and attributes children need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in the wider world. These are skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team working and critical thinking in the context of learning grouped into three core themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world (including economic wellbeing and aspects of careers education). PSHCE impacts on both academic and non-academic outcomes for children and is essential to personal development, behaviour, welfare and safeguarding. PSHCE incorporates Relationships and Health Education (RHE) as well as supporting aspects of Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development.

The following policies show how St. Johns teaches PSHCE and RHE-
