Creators

Creators took their art lesson outside this afternoon and enjoyed the sunshine. We were practising some printing skills using regular and irregular shapes. We even found things in nature such as leaves and flowers that we were able to print with. First we looked at the different shapes the object made and decided if they were regular or irregular. Then we experimented with overlapping the shapes to create a brighter, more colourful picture!

Summer Term!

Welcome back, I hope you had a lovely Easter!

Creators have been very busy on their first few days back in school. We have been exploring the different types of plants around school and identifying the parts. We noticed they have roots, a stem, leaves and some have flowers. We pulled apart a plan to investigate all of the different parts.

Creators followed the design process to make their own portable snack. We discussed that portable snacks are easy to hold and carry, easy to eat and that they usually have bread or pastry around the outside. We came up with lots of portable snacks but decided we were going to make a wrap as this would allow us to showcase the most technical skills like grating, peeling, cutting and folding.

Creators have been exploring maps in geography. We made a map of the local area using loose parts from provision. We labelled the map and then identified the features as either human features or physical features by labelling them as H or P. We used our concrete map to help us draw a pictorial map too!

Year 1 have been learning about structures in Design and Technology. We learned how to make structures strong, sturdy and stable. In this lesson we made paper (a material that usually isn’t very strong) stronger by rolling, folding and joining. We then built structures using the rolled and folded paper and noticed it was much stronger and harder to rip.

Creators took part in a Great Fire of London workshop! We learnt all about the houses in 1666 and then had a go at building a wall out of wattle and daub. We then made Thomas Farriner a new bakery, choosing materials that we thought would be waterproof. We tested our bakery’s using a spray bottle of water as rain to see if they kept Thomas dry. We had so much fun!

Creators have been exploring using the Bee-Bots! We tinkered with the buttons to find out what they do. Then we completed challenges using the predict, test and review cycle.

Creators have been developing there rolling skills in PE. First we practiced rolling a ball making sure to use the correct technique. Then we applied the skill to a game and rolled balls to try to hit a large ball over the other teams line to win a point!

Welcome back!

Creators have worked very hard to learn and perform a poem. We discussed how we can use expression in our voices to recite the poem and show how the girl is feeling. The poem is called Granny, Granny Please Comb my hair.

Creators have been making sculptures in art. We discovered Jaume Plensa’s Dream sculpture and recreated our own Dream sculptures using all the skills we have practiced so far this half term.

Creators have been exploring freezing and melting. Today we used different items to see which melted the ice the quickest. The hair dryer worked the best because it produced the most heat!

A huge well done to all of Creators for a fantastic class assembly. The children worked very hard on this and shared lots of their learning from history and geography focussing on London now and London at the time of The Great Fire.

Year 1 played a game of sink or float in science today. We made predictions about which objects would sink and which would float and categorised them into groups. We even chose some of our own objects from the classroom like rocks, shells and counters to see if they floated!

Welcome back!

On our first day back at school Creators went on a wonderful winter walk. This was part of our science learning as we discussed the changes in season and explored the signs of winter we could see from the playground. It was very cold and icy so we made sure to wrap up warm in our winter coats.

Year One have been learning all about the sense smell in science today! Using our sense of smell we described the scent of mystery items and tried to guess what they were. Our favourite smell was the hot chocolate and our least favourite smell was garlic.

Year 1 went on a nature walk around school. We looked for signs of autumn and discovered lots of autumn treasures in and around the trees!

In PE we practised our throwing and catching skills. We enjoyed finding out how quickly all of Creators could throw and catch the ball and tried to improve our class time.

Year 1 have been exploring the sense touch! We each took turns to feel what was inside the basket. We predicted what we thought was in the basket based on how it felt. We used words like rough, soft, hard, spiky and smooth to describe each item.

In geography, we have been learning all about the United Kingdom. We have learnt a song to help us remember the four countries that make up the UK! In this lesson we learnt all about England. We know the capital is London and explored some of the physical and human features of the country such as Wembley Stadium and Scafell Pike!

Creators explored the sense taste in science! We did some taste testing and described the taste of each food as either sweet, salty, bitter, sour or savoury. The chocolate cookie was very yummy and sweet but the lemon was too tangy and sour!

On Thursday we celebrated National European Day as a school. Creators celebrated by learning to sing head, shoulders, knees and toes in French making links to our current science topic!

Welcome to Year 1!

Below I have attached a letter which will provide you with lots of information about the year ahead. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will do my best to answer these for you.

Miss Eccles

Welcome to Year One!

I hope you have all had a lovely summer filled with lots of fun. What an amazing first day we have had! We have already been very busy in continuous provision and have shown off some amazing writing skills. It has been amazing to see how well you are already settling in as Creators.

This term will be full of fun activities to activate our brains after a long summer off. We are very excited to start drawing club again, where the children will explore a range of books such as 'Ruby's Worry', 'Little Red Riding Hood' and 'Argh Spider'! We will be doing lots of practical maths activities, sorting and grouping objects, calculating our number bonds to 10 and recognising and naming 3D shapes. In science we will be naming body parts and linking them to our senses!

I can't wait to see you all thrive this term! Please check back on our class page for updates as I am sure there will be lots more fabulous pictures for you to see during this fun-filled year!

Welcome back to the Summer term to our children and their families. A warm welcome to any parents/carers who have been allocated a place in our reception class for September you will be hearing from us very soon!
